Coding in Ontario Grade 3 math is about reading a short program, not writing an app. Algebra expectation C3.1 asks students to read code that repeats a sequence. The printable preview also checks the ideas that sit beside a loop. Students say which instruction comes last, what event starts the code, and what happens at the same moment a sound plays. A debug item shows a robot that should turn right between two moves and asks what is wrong. The repeat itself is the steps-forward question: how many steps the loop takes in all. A final item gives a starting direction and a series of turns and asks which way the robot faces. Nested repeats and if-statements are Grade 6 coding.
Ontario curriculum: Mathematics (2020) · Algebra C3.1 — read code that repeats a sequence
Expectation C3.1 is code that repeats a sequence. The questions are flowcharts about order, events, a loop, a wrong turn, and the direction the robot faces. Students read the code. They do not type a program.
Does the Grade 3 coding sheet include debugging?
Yes. One flowchart turns the wrong way between two moves, and students identify the error. A separate item counts the steps inside a repeat.
When are conditional statements introduced?
Choosing what happens next with a condition is the Grade 6 coding page, still under C3.1. Grade 3 reads a repeat and the order of instructions.
